Consumables for Dissolution Testing from QLA

They are not a generic "one size fits all" supplier. All of their products have been designed to meet or exceed USP and OEM specifications.

Dissolution Filters
Filtration in dissolution is important. Most manufacturers use a filter on the end of the sampling cannula. The cannula filters are made of UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) Polyethylene or Poroplast for 1-5 micron and are completely inert to most compounds.

Cannula Filters generally have a large surface area and may affect the hydrodynamics in the vessel. However they have a good flow rate and may be used when high particulates are present. A large porosity range is available. Different manufacturers recommend different filters for use with their probes and not all are interchangeable because of the probe diameter.

With dissolution filters, porosities are nominal and represent an average pore size rather than absolute. Thus a 35 micron and 40 micron filter will perform much the same.

Some low dimension sample probes require an in-line Filter Disc which has a lower surface area than a Cannula Filter. These are designed to keep the filtration process outside of the vessel but may suffer from blocking due to the lower surface area.

Dissolution Vessels
Good dissolution vessels are critical in obtaining correct and reproducible results and are sometimes overlooked as a key element in the dissolution test.

Although the USP states the dimensions for Glass Vessels, the tolerances are actually quite wide leading to a different dimension for vessels for each manufacturer. This means that vessels cannot easily be interchanged and that it is never advisable to substitute less than a complete set of alternative vessels and even then re-validation may be needed.

For some applications Plastic Vessels may be used although these are more easily scratched and also have a lower heat transfer than glass vessels.

Vessels can be categorised in several different ways, most simply by volume, bath manufacturer and by material.

About Baskets & Shafts for Dissolution Testing
All QLA baskets are manufactured from 316 Stainless Steel and are also available PTFE coated. Baskets are available for use with clips and the clipless (Distek) design. It is possible to use baskets and shafts with clips on Distek (Model 2100) baths.

All basket shafts are manufactured from 316 Stainless Steel with a USP compliant spring-clip and laser marked serial numbers. Is your Tablet Dissolution system conforming to USP 711?
